弗朗切斯科·瓜迪（Francesco Guardi）出生于威尼斯的特伦蒂诺（Trentino）的贵族家庭。他的父亲多梅尼科（Domenico）和弟弟尼科洛（Niccolò）和吉安·安东尼奥（Gian Antonio）也是画家，他的妹妹玛丽亚·塞西莉亚（Maria Cecilia）嫁给了他那个时代的杰出的欧洲画家乔瓦尼·巴蒂斯塔·提埃波罗（Giovanni Battista Tiepolo）。
瓜迪（Guardi）和他的弟弟们被认为是古典威尼斯画派最后的实践者。
1782年，瓜迪（Guardi）入选威尼斯美术学院（Fine Art Academy of Venice）院士。

圣玛丽亚·德拉·萨卢特教-堂（Santa Maria della Salute）坐落于威尼斯大运河尽头附近，凭借其独特的圆顶，成为这座城市最引人注目的地标之一，也是游客纪念画中最常出现的建筑。这幅作品是纽约大都会艺术博物馆于1871年购入的最早一批藏品之一，与之配套的还有一幅描绘里亚尔托桥（Rialto Bridge）上方大运河景色的“对画”。
